'My quit buddy' mobile app, originally designed and released in 2012, has been incredibly successful. With an app store rating of 4.4 out of 5 (592 reviews), this free application from the Australian Federal government has helped millions of people quit smoking. I was brought in to reimagine the UX/UI direction of the new and improved app which will launch soon.

THE PROBLEM

In light of its success, the decision to invest in a new approach to the app was made due to new developments in behavior change research and more recent feedback from people using the app. Additionally, smoking addiction rates remain unacceptably high, especially in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) communities.

WHAT I DID

Every project and process is different. After reviewing the research and preliminary UX ideas, it was clear that the current UX and strategy needed to be revised before going further.

Wireframe & prototype

After positive feedback from the government, I completed UX documents, including all states, error messages and multiple prototypes for testing. Due to time constraints I developed a content plan structure that could be worked on after I left.

SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE

I developed a signature experience to agree on UX strategy, visual design, and tone of voice. The application was to especially help and appeal to the ATSI communities due to high numbers of smokers. The visual style, tone of voice and accessibility around literacy issues were all considered. Care was taken to not marginalize the ATSI community further.

WIREFRAMING & TESTING

After receiving positive feedback, I worked with the delivery manager to scope out the priorities and feasibility of outcomes within the time allowed. Each category below was iterated on a number of times, liaising with the delivery manager and the feasibility of ideal scenarios and technicalities.

UI

After the UX was largely signed off, I began to construct the user interface design based on the signature experience document I constructed earlier. The color gradients reflect notions of calm, stress relief and optimism with the main pink color referencing the color experiments of the 1980s by Alexander Schauss, concluding that 'Baker-Miller pink', a certain type of pink color helped reduce anxious behavior. The design was created with symbols in Sketch and prototypes in Invision and Axure. Although there was not enough time for detailed animations, I specified how certain important transitions should appear, including animation speeds and references.

LEARNINGS

In some instances, It's ok if you are brought in to do a particular job but you identify a different problem and highlight that it might need to be solved first. In this case, the UX needed more work then the UI which I was brought on for. I suggested an alternate way forward which was received well by the delivery manager and creative director. Another learning from this project is around content, the creation of content is sometimes left to the end and its importance diminished. Content is key, especially in behavior change applications. I look forward to seeing the app and its content when it launches soon.
